Our client for this project wanted small cabin plans for a dependent person dwelling. It needed to fit into the backyard of an inner-city block behind the existing house. It also needed to comply with dependent person unit regulations and have good solar access through high windows. The client had an existing kitchen that they wanted to use which locked in aspects of the layout.
The cabin has a mixture of modern and traditional rustic building features including a cathedral ceiling, gable windows to the northeast, a Dorma window on the north and a 30° pitch roof. All windows are double glazed, and the external cladding is dark in colour which helps with the energy rating in the southern states.
